English as an Additional Language Teacher

The EAL courses at Miles Macdonell Collegiate are specifically designed to meet the needs of students for whom English is an additional language. The purpose of the programming is to develop English language skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Attention is paid to basic interpersonal communication skills as well as language for academic purposes for varied subject areas. All EAL classes at MMC are offered in a sheltered, classroom environment.

E-designated courses are also offered as part of our school's EAL programming. These courses follow the Manitoba Education and Training approved curriculum with significant adaptations made in order to facilitate language acquisition and interpersonal communication skills, academic language proficiency and subject area knowledge.

English truly is an additional language for all of our students! Some of our students speak 3, 4 or even 5 languages. Last year, students from twenty-eight different countries studied in one of our EAL classes. Over the past number of years, students from 70 different countries have studied and called MMC their school. Besides classroom studies, EAL students have various opportunities to participate in activities within our school and community and learn about our city and province.
